To witness these incredible beings in their natural habitat is something that cannot be described with mere words and/or photos, their undeniable strength almost belying their gentle disposition.

A Child of the World
The more I worked on it, the deeper it went, the more emotions it evoked. Maybe because I remember that moment so well: this young boy running out of the woods onto the dirt road we were driving on.
Maybe it is the many stories being told by his face, his handmade helmet, his clothing. Maybe it is the fear, the hope, the curiosity, the shear innocence that is being run over by the harsh realities of daily life.
It is moments like this that make me so very grateful for the life I have been so lucky to live. And it is moments like this that remind me I, we all, can do better. We all can do so much more to change this world to be a better place...... UgandaContemplation
This gentle giant was setteling down for an after lunch nap. Holding our gaze long enough to assure no danger was coming, this sweet soul driftet off into a well deserved siesta.

"Guarding Eyes"
Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda. Mountain Gorilla. The lead Silverback was already fast asleep. In front of this matriarch, several young gorillas were playing in a roccus manner. Making sure no one was playing to hard, and the nearby humans meant them no harm, she comfortably setteled into a peaceful nap.
"Nap, Interuppted"
Volcanoes National Park. Mountain Gorillas. Treking for these amazing beings can be an arduos experience, but moments like this make it all worth it. All of the sudden, we stumbled upon this mom napping with her baby. After she held our gaze for a bit, she got up, baby crawling onto her back, and joined the rest of her family that was close by.

"Wisdom"
Kibale National Park, Chimpanzee. On our first trip to see the chimpanzees in the wild, we were lucky to have not only great weather conditions, but to have the chimpanzees cooperate by not disappearing into the dense forrest. It was quite amazing to watch them interact with each other. Very confident in their own skin, these beautiful beings for the most part ignored us. One of the elders, this chimpanzee stayed close to the group, but at a quiet distance.

Silver Lining, Golden Monkey"
Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda. Golden Monkey. Rounding up our visit to the Volkanoes National Park, we were treated to a visit with the golden monkeys. Gregarious and playful, their curosity made for great portraits, as they had no qualms posing for the camera. This one in particular had the most piercing gaze.
